Loot boxes are reviled by many, but their removal from Rocket League hasn't been met with open arms. Even if the new system technically saves players money on ultra rare items—loot boxes are not known for their value—it doesn't feel that way. What it feels like is shopping at a tourist trap where all the items are marked up 500 percent.

As a brief primer, Rocket League's old system dropped crates after completed games. Keys, which cost a dollar a piece in bulk, opened them. Chances are, any given crate revealed a boring decal for a car you don't use, but they also offered the slight possibility of getting a coveted Black Market item, a category which includes universal animated decals and showy goal explosions.

Opposition is focused on the rarer stuff, with, say, an exotic wheel blueprint costing 2300 Credits. You get more Credits for buying in bulk: if you wanted those wheels, you’d need to buy at least 3,000 Credits for £19.23. That’s presuming that particular Blueprint had dropped for you, or you’d managed to trade for it on an exterior site. And if you want to buy Rocket League blueprints, visit 5mmo.com, a professional online in-game currency store.

That is too much money for pretend wheels. I struggle to see how anyone could extract £15 of value from them, when that money could buy you a couple of indie games or a banquet of fancy sausages. Prices in general should be lower, and hopefully will be. But whether this is a worse deal than gambling with keys depends on what you care about: accruing many items you weren’t after while buying an arbitrary number of keys in pursuit of a coveted item, or guaranteeing you get something specific.

As one post sums it up, if you'd bought 23 keys before, you'd get 23 items; now a single item might cost the same in credits as 23 keys would have cost. It remains to be seen whether this system will see changes based on user feedback, or if Blueprint trading will lessen the issue for the community. For now, though, it seems that the change has made cosmetic items in Rocket League more expensive, albeit also more transparent.
