Home > News > Amazon has delayed its upcoming MMO New World from Spring 2021 to August 31, 2021
Ever since Amazon Game Studios joined the video game industry, it has undergone one disappointment after the other. The developer and publisher has yet to release a successful title, as the servers for its team shooter Crucible has been shut down already due to the fact that it didn’t find an audience. Well, to be more specific, after an unsuccessful launch, Amazon Game Studios put Crucible back into closed beta, but decided to just shut down the game completely a few months after.

According to a freshly penned New World development blog, the delays to date have allowed the developer to spruce up quests, weapons, and armor variety, introduce fishing, hone the combat and crafting systems, expand the map with a new region, and prop up the mid and end-game with extra content. Yet, Double Helix needs additional time to implement ‘substantial improvements’ alongside some finish-line polish and fine-tuning.

The team also shared that, since last August's Preview Event, the team has "polished the combat system, added quest variety, expanded weapon and armor variety, added fishing, expanded the map to include a new region Reekwater, overhauled our crafting system, and continued to add mid-game and end-game content."

Originally slated for release in May of 2020, Amazon Game Studios’ free-to-play MMO New World slipped to August of 2020 and then to spring of 2021. According to the latest developer update, the game is now launching on August 31, 2021, with a closed beta starting July 20.

Given the fact that Amazon is a massive company with access to a lot of resources, its struggles concerning video game development have been confusing for many in the community. However, things may be looking up for the studio, what with CEO Andy Jassy taking over. An email from Jassy was recently leaked, which essentially suggests that the new CEO is more than ready to support Amazon Game Studios.

New World's Alpha will be continuing in the "months to come" and it plans on expanding testing by standing up EU servers on March 30, 2021. The Closed Beta test will begin on July 20, 2021, and those who pre-order the game will gain access to it.

The Closed Beta test will let players explore Ebonscale Reach (a new end-game zone in Aeternum), try their hands at five-player Expeditions.
